Gibault Catholic High School: Curriculum Guide

GUIDELINES

1. MATH REQUIREMENT for graduation is two credits. However, many colleges require 3 credits. Gibault Catholic High School recommends 4 years of math for all college-bound students. If a student is eligible for a math class (as designated by math department) and chooses NOT to take a third math credit, a waiver form (signed by parent) will be required.

2. FACULTY/ DEPARTMENT APPROVAL is indicated in one of two ways:

if so required.  Some courses do not require a signature.

3. ST. LOUIS UNIVERSITY COURSES FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT involve certain regulations that are solely controlled by the university. In particular, costs and academic prerequisites are set by SLU. Note: a student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 to be eligible for SLU classes.

4. VALEDICTORIAN and SALUTATORIAN eligibility requires students to take advanced, honors, and college credit courses all 4 years of high school. Please review the following chart that illustrates the MINIMUM expectations (although administrative discretion is also involved):

INTRODUCTION

Gibault offers an excellent curriculum not unlike the curriculum found in large high schools across the state of Illinois. Students may qualify to take honors classes with the opportunity to earn college credit from St. Louis University in Art, English, Spanish, and Social Studies. Gibault also offers courses for those who may need extra work in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Students should confer with parents and teachers before registering for classes. Some departments such as Math will indicate exactly which course should be taken next; other departments are more elective in nature. All course selections should be made with great care since actual offerings for 2006-2007 depend upon the number of students who select courses at registration time. ADDING OR DROPPING A CLASS AFTER MAY DEADLINE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED EXCEPT FOR VERY SERIOUS REASONS. A $10 PER CLASS CHANGE FEE FOR ADDING/DROPPING WILL BE CHARGED SHOULD A CHANGE BE NECESSARY. Students may not drop yearlong courses at the semester unless the teacher initiates the process and administrative approval is received. Reminder: Some courses have a specific course fee in addition to the textbook rental fee. The fee list is on the last page of this curriculum guide.

NCAA “core/ total” varies as to Division I and Division II.[9]

[1] NCAA “core courses” apply to student athletes who play at the Division I or Division II level. See Guidance for details on how to submit academic credentials to NCAA Clearinghouse.

[2] Students must earn the equivalent of one credit per year in Religion for each year in attendance at Gibault. The total number of Religion credits required for graduation by transfer students must equal 0.50 credit for each semester students attend Gibault.

[3] All students must participate in the class retreat program each year. If, for serious reasons, a student is unable to fulfill this requirement in any given year, the Campus Minister and the Principal will decide on a substitute retreat experience to fulfill the requirement

[4] All students must pass both the Federal and Illinois Constitution tests.

[5] All students are expected to complete Algebra 1 and one Geometry course.

[6] A foreign language waiver is required in senior year if FL requirement is not met.

[7] No more than eight performing music credits may be included in the total graduation credits.

[8] Some changes in content requirements occur from 2009 to 2010 that involve Math, English, and Writing. See Appendix for full details.

[9] NCAA Division II total is 14 core courses (2005 and after); Division 1 total is 14 (2006-2007) and 16 (2008 and after). GPA and ACT scores are also part of the eligibility process.

MAKING UP FAILED COURSES

Students who lose credit for core courses or required courses must make up these credits before the following school year through summer school or correspondence courses. If these options are not feasible, a failed course will be put on the student's next year schedule. A fee of $65 will be charged for each class that is retaken at Gibault.
