FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
French 1 (121)
Course description: French 1 is an introductory course offered to students to enrich their cultural, professional, and personal life through the learning of a foreign language and civilization. Students will communicate in French through listening, writing, speaking and reading. Basic vocabulary concerning numbers, food, sports, seasons, dates, colors, school, activities, weather, family, and telling time will be covered. Basic grammatical structures including the present tense of regular and irregular verbs, adjectives, negatives, questions, commands, articles, and object pronouns will be introduced.

French 2 (122)
Course description: This course is offered to students to build on French 1 skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the foreign language as well as increase the student's awareness of French culture. Through daily communicative activities in the target language, students will increase their vocabulary concerning clothing, furniture, rooms, directions, food, weather, activities, questions, illnesses, suggestions, apologizing, and giving advice. Students will also build on grammar structures learning the past tense, imperfect tense, and near future tense of regular and irregular verbs.
Prerequisite: Minimum of C average in French 1 and/or dept. approval.

HN French 3 (123)
Course description: Students will increase their language proficiency and build fluency through daily communicative activities and composition writing. Listening exercises will include hearing native speakers in a variety of typical, daily situations. Grammar skills will be expanded to include the future tense, the conditional tense, idiomatic expressions, negative constructions, and object pronouns. Students will expand their knowledge of the culture through independent projects on various francophone countries.
Prerequisite: Minimum of B in French 2 and/or dept. approval.

Course description: An intense language course designed to refine the four basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Fluency and proficiency in the language will be enhanced through storytelling and a variety of other communicative activities. Listening exercises will include hearing native speakers in a variety of typical, daily situations. Grammar skills will be expanded to include the subjunctive tense, compound perfect tenses, relative pronouns, prepositions, and possessives. Students will expand their knowledge of the culture through independent projects on various francophone countries.
Prerequisite: Minimum of B in French 3 and/or dept. approval.

SPANISH 1 (131)
Course description: Spanish 1 is an introductory course offered to students to enrich their cultural, professional and personal life through the learning of the second most commonly used language in our country. Students will learn basic listening, writing, reading and speaking skills in the target language, as well as becoming familiar with the cultures where it is used.

ADV Spanish I (130)
Course description: Honors Spanish I will move at a more rapid pace than Spanish I. It is for those students with high scores in Mathematics and Language on the placement exam, or simply have a natural ability for language study, as evidenced by performance in Spanish at the elementary school level.
Prerequisite: Department approval or recommendation by grade school teacher of Spanish.

Course description: Spanish II will build on the communication skills learned in Spanish I to increase the student’s ability to use the language. Cultural awareness is continued with new themes.

Course description: Advanced Spanish 2 will build on the communication skills learned in Spanish 1 to increase the student's ability to use the language. Cultural awareness is continued with new themes. Students will move at a more rapid pace than Spanish 2.

Course description: Students will increase their language proficiency, build their fluency, consolidate their foundation and expand their knowledge. Students will focus on all four language skills: listening, writing, reading, and speaking in addition to cultural awareness. "Students with a GPA of 3.0 or above may enroll in the St. Louis U. 1-8-1-8 program and earn three college credits second semester (SLU Sp 110). Cost in 2007-08 was $55.00 per credit paid directly to the University.
Note: second semester course is HN Span 3 (137) if not taken for college credit from SLU.

Course description: Spanish 4 is an intense language course. All four skills are practiced: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is on composition and conversation. Students learn to read foreign newspapers in Spanish and come to an awareness of what is happening in the Spanish-speaking world today. They will become acquainted with literature of Spain and Latin America.
"Students with a GPA of 3.0 or above who have completed SLU Span.110 may enroll in the St. Louis U 1-8-1-8 program and earn three college credits PER SEMESTER: (SLU Spx115 sem 1) (SLU Spx210, sem. 2) Cost in 2007 –08 was $55.00 per credit.
Note: HN SPAN 4 (134) is course name/number if Spanish 4 is not taken for college credit.

INTRODUCTION TO LATIN (140)
Course description: In this elective course, students will learn the basics of the Latin language, be able to translate simple readings, greatly increase their vocabulary, and at the same time investigate (uncover) the history, culture and contributions of the Ancient Romans. It will be especially helpful to those going into medicine, nursing, law, pharmacy and education. This course does not fulfill the foreign language requirement for graduation. Rather, it is supplemental.
Requirements: Capability of learning a foreign language as determine by a placement test or previous language study.

LATIN 1A and 1B
Course description: Latin 1A gives the basic structures of the Latin language enabling the student to read and write simple sentences. Emphasis is given to vocabulary building for both English and other foreign languages. It will foster logical and well-ordered thinking besides increasing vocabulary for careers in medicine, law, education, diplomacy, and other professions. Latin 1B is a continuation of Latin 1A, giving the student a wider and more profound knowledge of the language. It targets the irregular verbs, perfect tenses, and passive voice. Roman history, legends and culture are learned through the Latin readings. THIS COURSE DOES NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF THE 2-YEAR REQUIREMENT.
Requirements: Introduction to Latin (may be waived in certain instances).

LATIN AMERICAN CULTURE(130)
Course descirption: This is an enrichment course for students not taking a foreign language. It examines the culture, history, geography, current events and language of Spanish speaking countries - Latin America and Spain through film, music, art, realia, lecture, and active participation. Learning activities include food demonstrations and power point presentations. The objective of the course is to broaden our concept of th world and to understand better our Spanish-speaking neighbors.
Prerequisite: Juniors/Seniors who are not taking a foreign language Length of course: One semester or one year (every other day) Credit: 0.25 per semester
