Gibault High's Student Environmental Club

SCOPE is our student environmental club and is open to all students who have an interest in helping and improving the environment both locally and globally.  In order to achieve these goals, we recycle paper, aluminum, etc. at school and have a number of litter clean-up days at school throughout the year.

Several years ago, we became a participant in the “Adopt-A-Highway” program and clean up a mile section of the Route 3 by-pass four times a year.

In the fall and sometimes the spring we choose a weekend (usually Sunday) outing to areas such as Lone Elk Park, Rockwood Reservation, the Zoo, the Missouri Botanical Garden, etc.  During the year we have several fundraisers, such as Bake Sales, t-shirt sales, and before Christmas, we take orders for and create fruit baskets which help fund our annual trip to Chicago

We visit Shedd Aquarium, and museums in Chicago over Casmir Pulaski weekend (early March).   For Earth week, we sponsor several events, such as, a soda-tab contest (winning class gets a decorated cake for Field Day), a guessing contest—such as guess the number of gummy worms in a container, and a jeans day which provides money to support an “Adopt-A-Bird” at the World Bird Sanctuary.

At the end of the year, we have a pizza party on the patio for all active members and vote on our adoption of a bird.  We also use the money from recycling and our summer project (working at the St. Louis Strassenfest) for a $500 scholarship given to one of our members for their next year’s tuition.

New projects are always welcomed, as are new members!
